The Nature of Diamonds

The Nature of Diamonds is on exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum now through March 22, 2009. The exhibit, which is a part of the museum's series "A Season of Gems," includes displays of record-holding diamonds and priceless diamond jewelry, a historical galleries section that highlights the cultural and historical significance of diamonds, an authentic recreation of a mine tunnel, and more.

The impressive selection of gems on display includes the Incomparable, a 407.48-carat diamond that holds the record as the third largest cut diamond in the world. Also on exhibit is the 254-carat Oppenheimer Diamond. Diamond jewelry by Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and other well-known designers will also be exhibited.

George E. Harlow, curator of gems and minerals at New York's American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), spent five years creating the exhibit, which has traveled to museums around the U.S. and the world since its debut at the AMNH in 1997. Harlow's bookThe Nature of Diamonds, released for the opening of the exhibit, reveals more information about the world of diamonds and is available through Amazon.com.
