Art Jewelry's Staff

Hazel Wheaton, Editor I joined Kalmbach in October 2005. I was the managing editor of Lapidary Journal for 10 years, gaining knowledge about jewelry and gemstones and the endlessly fascinating people who work with them. A native of Pennsylvania, I graduated from Haverford College and spent my junior year in Edinburgh, Scotland, which instilled a love of travel, whiskey, and really good tea. Prior to entering jewelry publishing, I worked in travel publishing, a career that took me to New York City and then London, where I lived for four years. Outside of work, I'm an avid movie-goer and reader (because I apparently don't get enough of words during my work hours), a sports fan (my Wisconsin coworkers have been surprisingly understanding about my Pittsburgh sympathies), wine enthusiast, music lover, and devotee of really bad science fiction movies. |

Jill Erickson, Associate Editor I joined the Art Jewelry staff in March 2006. Prior to coming on board the magazine, I was the sole proprietor of Create A Scene, my mural painting service. Before that, I worked as a communications specialist for a corporate law firm in my hometown, Milwaukee. I earned my BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and my MA and MFA degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City (go Hawkeyes!). My affinity for experimenting with all sorts of media involves combining techniques and materials borrowed from photography, printmaking, book arts, and jewelry arts. I am consistently drawn to themes with a natural history bent and enjoy researching and reading about all aspects of a project. To see photos of my work, check out my Web site www.jlerickson.com. I live in the Milwaukee area with my husband, who patiently indulges my tendency to turn every room of the house into "studio space." |

Addie Kidd, Associate Editor I've said that the hobby I'm best at is, perhaps, collecting hobbies. I love to do and make so many things! But jewelry making is by far my favorite hobby; the instant my toddler fingers were coordinated enough to slide a pony bead onto a length of brightly colored plastic lacing, I was a jewelry designer. Following that passion, I took jewelry classes in high school and then earned my goldsmithing and silversmithing diploma from Georgian College in Ontario, Canada, in 2002. After that, I worked as a self-employed goldsmith in Toronto and later in Austin, Texas. In November 2006 I happily moved back to the Midwest (I'm originally from Indiana) to take a position at Bead&Button magazine. And in October 2007, I transferred to Art Jewelry, where I'm excited to be part of such a vibrant, creative, and oftentimes delightfully quirky staff. When I'm not with my beloved torch, I enjoy reading, photography (both shooting and digital manipulation), knitting, going out to hear live music, laughing at my cat Begby's antics, and doing what I love best next to working with metal and stones: traveling. |

Kristin Sutter, Associate Editor In 2005, I moved to Milwaukee to work as the copy editor for Art Jewelry as well as the magazine's sister publications, BeadStyle and Bead&Button. In October 2007, I became a full-time Art Jewelry staff member. I'm still copy editing the magazine, but I'm also writing articles, guiding contributors through the project-submission process, making sure we meet deadlines, and maintaining the Web site. Previously, I worked as a publications coordinator for a number of regional magazines. In college, I interned at Rosebud magazine, a nonprofit literary publication. There, under the tutelage of real-life hippie and super-experienced editor Rod Clark (his résumé is 18 pages long), I tried my hand at enough aspects of the industry to realize that I'm interested in all of them. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004 with an English degree with an emphasis in creative writing. Other passions include yoga, reading, dancing, and traveling. |

Linda Kast, Publisher Do what you love; love what you do. That sage advice dispensed long ago from my mother launched my career in publishing. From my first encounter with an X-acto knife and running galleys through a waxing machine to everything that's now digital, I engaged in a love affair with reader service. Whether it's creating and distributing content for magazines, books, Web sites, or videos, I am most comfortable connecting with groups who are passionate about their interests and activities. I joined Kalmbach and the staff of Art Jewelry in November 2007. Born and raised in Chicago, I graduated from Elmhurst College with a BFA in time arts/communications and have spent long hours in the darkroom, at the copy desk, and among colleagues discussing the merits of various media. When I'm not working, I'm making jewelry, knitting, crocheting, or studying fiber arts and embellishment techniques for my next project. |
